1970년대 아르헨티나의 혼란과 격변의 시기, 암울하고 불안한 시절을 살아가던 사람들에게 웃음과 위안을 선사한 마젤란펭귄 이야기. 우연한 만남으로 테라스에 살게 된 펭귄과의 특별한 우정을 담고 있는 실화다.
하얀 넥타이에 검은색 연미복, 새까맣고 반짝이는 눈동자, 실룩거리는 두툼한 엉덩이, 뒤뚱뒤뚱 걷는 짧은 다리, 호기심 어린 얼굴을 가진 '후안(Juan)'은 키가 어른 무릎 높이만한 마젤란펭귄이다. 톰의 집 테라스에 사는 후안은 학교 제일의 스타다. 녹조 낀 수영장에서 함께 수영하고 아이들과 계단 빨리 내려가기 시합을 하거나, 럭비팀의 마스코트가 되어 응원도 하면서 아이들은 후안의 열렬한 팬이 된다.
학교 선생님들의 귀여운 술친구가 되고, 세탁실 아주머니의 든든한 지원자도 되어준다. 또한 근심에 쌓인 사람에게는 이야기를 묵묵히 들어주는 뛰어난 고민상담가다. 학교에서 주목받지 못하던 한 소년의 수영 코치가 되어 그의 삶에 큰 변화를 선사하기도 한다.
