2014년 뉴베리 아너 상 수상작. 말더듬증 때문에 사람들을 기피하던 빅터가 타인의 시선에 주눅 들지 않고 당당히 말하게 되기까지의 과정을 그린 작품이다. 열세 살 주인공을 통해 인간에 대한 깊은 이해와 통찰력을 담은 이 책은 저자 빈스 바터의 자전적 이야기이기도 하다. 장애를 고치지는 못해도 극복할 수 있으며, 그 힘은 본연의 자기 모습을 마주하고 사랑하는 데에서 출발함을 전하는 감동적인 작품이다.
주인공 빅터는 부유한 가정의 외동아들로 부족할 게 없지만, 친구를 대신해서 한 달 동안만 임시로 신문을 배달한다. 원래 야구팀에서 강속구를 잘 던지기로 유명한 빅터에게 집집마다 신문을 던지는 일쯤이야 식은 죽 먹기다. 다만, 매주 금요일마다 신문값을 받으러 다닐 걱정에 잠을 설칠 정도다. 입만 열면 더듬거리는 말투 때문에 모자란 아이 취급을 받기 일쑤이기 때문이다.
그러나 빅터는 사람들과 하나둘 교류하며 조금씩 변해 간다. 특히 해박한 지식과 따뜻한 품성을 지닌 스피로 아저씨를 만나면서부터 빅터는 ‘대화’를 하고 싶어 한다. 빅터는 사람들과 조금씩 소통하며, 본연의 자기 모습을 서서히 깨달아 가는데…. 겉으로 드러나는 모습보다는 내면의 본모습을 들여다봐야 한다는 불변의 진리를 다시 한 번 생각하게 하는 작품이다.
