인도 빈민가에서 잇따르는 아동 실종 사건을 수사하는 어린이 탐정단의 이야기를 그린 『보라선 열차와 사라진 아이들』은 인도 출신 영국 작가인 디파 아나파라의 데뷔작으로, 뭄바이와 델리 등에서 저널리스트로 일하던 당시의 경험과 인도에서 나고 자란 기억을 바탕으로 쓴 소설이다. 디파 아나파라는 집필 중이던 이 작품의 앞부분만으로 브리드포트 페기채프먼-앤드루스 상과 루시케번디시 소설상, 데버라로저스 재단 문학상을 수상했으며, 이후 장편으로 완성한 『보라선 열차와 사라진 아이들』이 2021년 에드거 상 수상작으로 선정되면서 본격문학과 장르문학을 아우르는 영미 문단의 기대주로 떠올랐다.

빈민가에 사는 아홉 살 소년 자이는 공부보다 [경찰 순찰대]나 [범죄의 도시] 같은 텔레비전 드라마를 좋아하는 아이다. 자이는 오랜 수사극 시청으로 다져졌다고 믿는 자신의 추리력을 빈민가 아동 연속 실종 사건을 해결하는 데 쓰기로 마음먹는다. 그리고 늘 서로 투덕거리는 단짝 친구인 파리, 파이즈와 의기투합하여 탐정단을 꾸린다. 자이 탐정단, 일명 ‘보라선 정령 순찰대’의 탄생이다. 자이는 실종 아동의 가족 및 주변 사람들을 통해 탐문하는 것은 물론, 수사를 위해 값비싼 보라선 전철을 타려고 찻집에서 아르바이트를 하는 등 여러모로 고군분투한다. 하지만 실종된 아이들을 찾기란 쉬운 일이 아니다. 어른들이 외면하는 동안 아이들은 계속해서 실종되고, 어느덧 위험은 자이와 친구들에게까지 닥쳐오는데……. 보라선 정령 순찰대는 과연 텔레비전 드라마 속 ‘경찰 순찰대’처럼 사건을 멋지게 해결할 수 있을까?

He asks Pari and Faiz to be his assistants, and together they draw up lists of people to interview and places to visit.

But what begins as a game turns sinister as other children start disappearing from their neighborhood. Jai, Pari, and Faiz have to confront terrified parents, an indifferent police force, and rumors of soul-snatching djinns. As the disappearances edge ever closer to home, the lives of Jai and his friends will never be the same again.
