46년 동안 코넬대학교 영문과에서 학생들을 가르친 윌리엄 스트렁크의 'The Elements of Style'은 'The Little Book' 이라는 또 다른 이름을 가지고 있다. '그 작은 책' 안에 정확하고 간결하게 영어를 쓰기 위한 모든 방법들이 다 들어 있다는, 감탄의 애칭이다. 

실제로 이 책은 영문법의 핵심 중의 핵심만을 모은 영작문 기본서로 잘 쓴 영어와 잘못 쓴 영어를 판단하는 기준으로서 통용되며 영미권 작가들과 신문기자, writing test를 준비하는 수험생들의 필독서로 인식되고 있다. 그의 제자였던 E. B.화이트 등이 개정판을 내며 1,000만 부 이상이 팔려나갔고 영작문의 필수적인 요소들을 일목요연하게 정리한 가장 유명한 책이자, 가장 좋은 책으로 인정받았다. 또한 스티븐 킹과 같은 유명 작가에게 영향을 끼쳤다. 무엇보다 각종 writing test를 준비하는 수험생에게 가장 큰 도움이 될 것이며, 평소 영어 글쓰기의 압박에 시달리는 직장인이나 대학생 및 초중고생들도 영어작문의 기반을 다질 수 있다. 

책은 영문 규칙만을 전달하는 것을 넘어 '글을 쓴다'는 행위에 대한 보편적인 진리를 전달한다. 간결하고 정확하게 자신의 생각을 전달하는 것이 모든 글쓰기의 기본임을 웅변한다. 따라서 영어 학습을 위해서 뿐만 아니라 좀더 정확하고 효율적으로 자신의 생각을 글로 나타내고 싶은 이들에게 소중한 지침을 제공한다.
