브루노는 아버지의 승진에 의해 베를린에서 아우슈비츠 수용소 옆에 지어진 관사로 이사를 온다. 9살인 브루노는 그 곳이 어떤 곳인지 전혀 알지 못하고 있다가 무료함을 견디지 못하고 철조망 근처로 탐험을 온다. 그곳에서 줄무늬 파자마를 입은 소년 쉬미엘을 우연히 만나게 되고 같은 해, 같은 날에 태어난 둘은 깊은 우정을 쌓게 된다.

소설 내내 전쟁과 나치에 대한 어떤 이야기도 언급되지 않는데, 독자는 이야기가 전개되면서 점차 브루노의 아버지가 나치의 장군이며, 새로 이사를 간 곳은 다름 아닌 아우슈비츠이고 쉬미엘은 그곳에 수감된 유태인 아이라는 것을 서서히 알아간다.

2차 대전 중의 유태인 학살을 다룬 수많은 책과 영화 중 이 작품이 특별한 것은 가해자인 나치 장군의 9살 짜리 아이의 눈을 통해 인간의 증오와 광기, 전쟁의 공포를 다루고 있으며, 동시에 어린 소년들이 그려내는 감동적인 우정이 따뜻하고 슬프며, 아름답기 때문일 것이다.

Berlin, 1942: When Bruno returns home from school one day, he discovers that his belongings are being packed in crates. His father has received a promotion and the family must move to a new house far, far away, where there is no one to play with and nothing to do.
