엘로디는 엄마가 새 직장을 구하게 되면서 이븐타운으로 이사를 가게 된다. 이븐타운은 모든 것이 완벽해보였다. 이븐타운에서의 일과는 모두 편안하면서도 재미있었다. 주방에는 엘로디가 시도해볼 만한 레시피가 담긴 상자가 있었고, 학교 가는 길엔 아름다운 풍경이 펼쳐져 있다. 블루베리를 따러 갈 때면 블루베리는 딱 알맞게 익어 있다. 

다만 약간 이상한 점은, 모든 집이 다 똑같이 생겼고, 이곳에는 아이스크림이 딱 세 가지 맛 밖에 없다. 그리고 음악시간에는 오로지 한 곡만 연주한다. 이 마을(town)의 모든 것은 짝수(even)이다. 그 완벽(혹은 완벽함을 가장한 무엇)을 위해 무언가 대가를 지불하고 있는 것은 아닐까?
