『Down and Out in Paris and London』에 등장하는 주인공 ‘나’는 조지 오웰 자신을 모델로 한 것이며 작품에 기술된 내용은 조지 오웰의 목격과 체험을 토대로 했다. 조지 오웰이 본명인 에릭 아서 블레어 대신 필명인 ‘조지 오웰’로 이 책을 출판한 이유는 그의 가족과 친지들이 당황하지 않도록 하려는 데 있었다고 하는데, 이후 그의 작품의 거의 대부분에 ‘조지 오웰’이라는 필명을 사용하게 된다.

‘나’는 파리에서 영어교습으로 생계를 해결했으나 일자리를 잃고 남은 돈마저 여관에서 도난당한 채 무일푼의 신세로 전락한다. 중산층이었던 그가 처음으로 겪은 가난은 예상과는 전혀 다르다. 가난이란 지극히 단순한 것이리라 생각했지만 실은 “굉장히 복잡”했고 무시무시하리라 생각했지만 “그저 궁상맞고 진절머리가 날 따름”인 것이었다. 그가 겪은 굶주림은 “해파리가 되어버린 것 같기도 하고, 피를 다 뽑아내고 대신 미지근한 물을 넣은” 듯한 느낌이었다. 그는 호텔식당에서 하루 15시간씩 접시닦이를 하면서 배고픔을 면하지만 대신 수면부족에 시달리며 하루하루를 살아나간다. 그 와중에도 그는 접시닦이 노동에 대한 근본적인 성찰을 하고 사회의 부조리를 깨닫는다.

파리에서의 접시닦이 생활이 혹독한 노동으로 생리적인 것이었다면 런던의 노숙자 생활은 주변의 차가운 멸시와 불편한 잠자리, 행정당국의 편의주의 등 사회적 편견으로 인한 정신적인 것이었다. 값싼 간이숙소와 구빈원을 전전하는 동안 ‘나’는 부랑자를 양산하는 사회 제도의 모순을 온몸으로 느끼게 되고 그동안 가졌던 부랑자에 대한 편견을 버리게 된다.

오웰은 작가를 지망하는 20대 중반의 문학청년 시절에 그가 살아가는 사회 현실을 이해하려는 의도에서 이 작품을 집필했다. 그는 5년 동안 영국 식민지 버마에서 경찰관으로 일하면서 피억압자와 억압자의 정의롭지 못한 관계를 체험한 데에 상당한 내면적 고뇌를 겪었다. 불의한 식민 체제의 봉사자였다는 죄의식이 심정적으로 피억압자의 처지를 이해하고자 하는 강렬한 충동을 일으켰음에 틀림없다. 이러한 오웰의 심리 상태는 사회적 약자에 대한 관심을 강화시키고 또 『Down and Out in Paris and London』에 담겨 있는 하층민 생활 체험을 집필하게 되는 정신적 동력을 제공했을 것이다. 또한 이 작품은 그가 훗날 『동물농장』과 『1984』 같은 정치권력과 개인의 문제를 고찰할 수 있는 사회 비판적 통찰력과 감수성의 자양분이 되었다.

Written when Orwell was a struggling writer in his twenties, it documents his 'first contact with poverty'. Here, he painstakingly documents a world of unrelenting drudgery and squalor - sleeping in bug-infested hostels and doss houses of last resort, working as a dishwasher in Paris's vile 'Hotel X', surviving on scraps and cigarette butts, living alongside tramps, a star-gazing pavement artist and a starving Russian ex-army captain. Exposing a shocking, previously-hidden world to his readers, Orwell gave a human face to the statistics of poverty for the first time - and in doing so, found his voice as a writer.

Eric Arthur Blair (1903-1950), better known by his pen-name, George Orwell, was born in India, where his father worked for the Civil Service. An author and journalist, Orwell was one of the most prominent and influential figures in twentieth-century literature. His unique political allegory Animal Farm was published in 1945, and it was this novel, together with the dystopia of Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949), which brought him world-wide fame. All his novels and non-fiction, including Burmese Days (1934), Down and Out in Paris and London (1933), The Road to Wigan Pier (1937) and Homage to Catalonia (1938) are published in Penguin Modern Classics.
