세계적인 분석철학자 이언 해킹의 서론

<과학혁명의 구조>(1962)의 출간 50주년을 기념하여 출간된 제4판(2012)에는 저명한 분석철학자이자 토머스 쿤의 패러다임 이론을 푸코의 사회과학 이론에 접목시켰다는 평가를 받는 과학철학자 이언 해킹이 쓴 서론이 추가되었다. “이언 해킹의 서론”은 <과학혁명의 구조>가 서구 지식사회에 미친 방대한 영향들을 정리하고, “과학”의 진보가 이룩되는 과정을 체계적으로 요약한다. 또한 쿤에 의해서 제시된 패러다임과 공약불가능성 같은 개념들을 더 명확하게 정의하고 쿤의 아이디어들이 오늘날의 과학에 어떤 타당성을 가지는지를 검토하고 있다.
<과학혁명의 구조>의 출간은 학계에서 열광적인 찬사와 논쟁을 불러일으켰던 하나의 획기적인 “사건”이었다. 쿤의 과학관의 핵심은 근본적으로 과학적 지식의 발전이 “비연속적”이라는 데에 있으며, 이는 과학의 진보가 누적적이라는 종래의 논리경험주의의 과학관(科學觀)을 뿌리째 흔들어놓았다. 패러다임, 패러다임 전환이라는 용어는 일반 사회에서도 유행어가 되기에 이르렀다.
쿤은 과학혁명들 사이의 기간에서 과학자들이 통상적으로 펼치는 안정된 과학 활동을 가리켜 정상과학(定常科學)이라고 규정했다. 이러한 정상과학에서 ‘과학자 공동체’는 패러다임에 의존한다. 쿤의 과학혁명은 하나의 패러다임이 심각한 변칙현상들의 빈번한 출현에 의해서 위기에 부딪혀 붕괴될 때에 일어나는 현상으로서 그 결과는 새로운 패러다임의 출현을 가져온다. 이 두 패러다임 사이에는 합리적인 기준만으로는 비교할 수 없는 “공약불가능성”이 존재한다. 과학에 대한 이러한 새로운 관점은 20세기 지성사의 “혁명”이었다.

A good book may have the power to change the way we see the world, but a great book actually becomes part of our daily consciousness, pervading our thinking to the point that we take it for granted, and we forget how provocative and challenging its ideas once were?and still are. The Structure of Scientific Revolutions is that kind of book. When it was first published in 1962, it was a landmark event in the history and philosophy of science. Fifty years later, it still has many lessons to teach.

With The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, Kuhn challenged long-standing linear notions of scientific progress, arguing that transformative ideas don’t arise from the day-to-day, gradual process of experimentation and data accumulation but that the revolutions in science, those breakthrough moments that disrupt accepted thinking and offer unanticipated ideas, occur outside of “normal science,” as he called it. Though Kuhn was writing when physics ruled the sciences, his ideas on how scientific revolutions bring order to the anomalies that amass over time in research experiments are still instructive in our biotech age.

This new edition of Kuhn’s essential work in the history of science includes an insightful introduction by Ian Hacking, which clarifies terms popularized by Kuhn, including paradigm and incommensurability, and applies Kuhn’s ideas to the science of today.
