친절을 베푸는 힘, 다르게 행동하는 용기를 단순하고 재치 있게 이야기하는 그림책

네 명의 친구들이 늦은 밤 숲 속을 살금살금 움직인다. 한 마리 새를 잡기 위해 한 걸음, 한 걸음, 새가 알아차리지 않도록 조심스럽게 발을 내딛는다. 그 고요하고 숨 막히는 분위기를 깨는 건 제일 뒤에 서 있던 키가 가장 작은 친구의 한마디. “안녕, 짹짹아?” 아니, 새를 잡으러 왔는데 새에게 인사를 하는 법이 어디 있나! 당황한 나머지 세 명의 친구들이 주의를 준다. “쉬잇, 조용히 해!” 다시 살금살금, 천천히, 살며시 다가가서 “하나, 둘, 셋…….” 푸드득! 새는 거만한 표정으로 친구들을 따돌린 채 유유히 날아간다.

새를 발견하고, 누군가는 반갑게 인사하고, 나머지가 주의를 주고, 결국 새를 놓치는 장면의 반복. 이렇게 쉽고 단순한 반복 구조를 아이들은 사랑한다. 새를 놓치면서 “아이코!” 하고 발랑 넘어지는 유머에 아이들은 까르륵거린다. 뒤에서 또 넘어지면, 똑같은 포즈로 넘어지면? 아이들은 더욱 사랑한다. 책을 읽으면서 캐릭터를 나누어 역할 놀이를 할 수도 있다. 한 명은 “안녕!” 인사하고, 다른 한 명은 손가락을 입에 대고 “쉬잇, 쉬잇!” 해 보는 등 쉽게 따라할 수 있는 말놀이가 가득하다. 캐릭터들의 천방지축 모험을 따라가다 보면, 아이와 어른 모두 쉽고 단순한 반복 구조의 매력에 여지없이 빠져들 것이다.
